What Is A Radiant Barrier?

Radiant barriers are made of a reflective material usually aluminum and are intended or designed to work in your attic to keep some of the heat from the sun away from your living space making the home more comfortable while at the same time reducing heating and cooling costs as well as wear and tear on heating and cooling equipment. There are five types of radiant barriers.   This article has two simple real world examples that help consumers understand how radiant barriers work and what the benefits are.

Radiant Barriers Keep The Heat Out

In the summer radiant barriers have many uses.  In the case of a vehicle think of a windshield sun protector which use a reflective surface to keep the sun’s rays out of the vehicle.  By keeping the sun’s rays out the windshield protector keeps the vehicle’s temperature down and reduces cracking and fading of the interior.  Similar to a car a radiant barrier in the home will keep the temperature down making the home more comfortable and reducing the need to run cooling equipment such as fans or air conditioner.  Click here to learn more about radiant barriers in the summer.

Radiant Barriers Keep The Heat In

In the winter radiant barriers are useful too!  A great real world example is comes from the kitchen.  When we picture a baked potato, we picture it wrapped in shiny aluminum foil.  Aluminum traps the heat and keeps it warmer longer.  In a properly sealed home a radiant barrier will trap the heat in the home and keep it warm longer.  By keeping the heat in the home longer the need to run heating equipment is reduced.

Who Are The Experts?

The experts have done extensive testing on radiant barriers and have shown they are effective.  But who are they and why are they qualified?

Florida Solar Energy Center:  This organization is a research institute of the University of Central Florida.  They know a few things about heat down there!  The mission of the organization is to “research and develop energy technologies that enhance Florida’s and the nation’s economy and environment and to educate the public, students and practitioners on the results of research.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory:  The ORNL has “a well-deserved reputation for combining insights from fundamental science with an in-depth technical understanding of applied systems to deliver practical solutions to real-world problems.”  The laboratory collaborates with private industry to accelerate the deployment of that science.  Click here to see their information about radiant barriers.

U.S. Department of Energy: The mission of the energy department is “to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.  They have directed a portion of those efforts toward radiant barriers and information about radiant barriers can be found here.

Because a radiant barrier can be used in the summer and the winter it is a useful and economical way of making the home more comfortable thus reducing the need to use heating and cooling equipment, reducing noise, extending the life of that equipment and reducing energy bills.  Want to learn more click on the links above or read the article called 4 things you need to know about radiant barriers.
