Insulation Category: Blanket

This is part one in a series of articles discussing categories and types of insulation.  Smart Energy Today, Inc.™ sells all kinds of insulation and feature a reflective insulation solutoin called Sol-Blanket Insulation™.  The reflective insulation laid over existing insulation works as a blanket boosting its thermal efficiency.  Every home is different and the type of insulation needed can vary.  This article discusses blankets, batts and rolls.

What are Blankets, Batts or Rolls made of?

Blankets, Batts and rolls can be made of fiberglass, mineral (rock or slag), plastic fibers and natural fibers.  Sol-Blanket Insulation™ uses plastic fibers as a core and has five layers.  They are closed-cell polyethylene foam at the center with the topside and bottom side both having aluminum foil with polyethylene backing attaching it to the closed-cell polyethylene foam.

The foil acts as the radiant and protective barrier, the closed-cell polyethylene foam acts as an insulator and the polyethylene backing simply attaches closed-cell polyethylene foam to the foil.

Where are these types of Insulation applicable?

These types of insulation can be installed in unfinished walls including foundation walls as well as floors (crawl space) and ceilings (Attic Floor).  The most common place for Sol-Blanket Insulation™ in northern climates is to be installed over existing installation and in crawl spaces.

Insulation Installation Methods

Installation Method or Methods of these types of installation is to fit them between studs, joists, and beams.  Sol-Blanket Insulation™ is simply laid over existing insulation thus it acts as a “blanket”.  The radiant barrier component of the reflective insulation, inspired by NASA radiant barrier technology, prevents 94-97% of radiant heat (from
